Chlorophyll

by Chris Cleverley

/

about

Chlorophyll is inspired by the way plants alter their floral pigmentation to protect from increasingly harmful UV rays, but become less recognisable to pollinators in the process. This heartbreaking dilemma is presented as analogy for the way we may harden ourselves during adverse times but risk losing our essence and vitality in the process.

It's both an anthem for those weather-worn from the head-spinning events of the global pandemic, as well as a stark apology to a natural world ravaged by climate emergency

lyrics

Lyrics

This kind of thing, it always comes with a cost.
We calculate the reckoning, adjusting for the loss.
And so we make the best of things in time that we have got,
Either that or ride the crest out hoping it’s enough.

But it hurts me to see your colours change;
To know you’re not the same.
And it hurts me to see how the world we made
Led you to be this way.

I’ve taken to watching the subtle way
The light around us seems to change a little with each passing day.
Sometimes it shimmers, sometimes it fades,
Only to illuminate you in the most perfect way.

But it hurts me to see your colours change;
To know you’re not the same.
I’m ashamed to see how the world we made
Led you to be this way.

But I understand.
How I understand.

This kind of thing, it always comes with a cost.

But it hurts me to see your colours change;
To watch your pigment fade,
To know you’re not the same.
But I'd adore you any way
That you need to be.
